Whats New?

Hello Hello everyone! It has been a little while since my last post….sorry.

So Andrew has been gone for about 3 weeks now and Chewbacca and I have been staying very busy.

Chewbacca’s first time seeing snow…..woke me up at 6am one morning to go out and play in it and this was all he did…

I have also been trying out a lot of new recipes.  But those will have to come in later in a different blog.

So enough boring you with what I have been doing I am just going to update you on my training for the half marathon so far.

This past Saturday I got up super early (5am) and ran 8 mi on the treadmill.  This is the longest I have ever done on the deathmill and I do not know how I got through.  I ran it in 71:11 mins….I was satisfied and felt great after.  This was my longest run so far in 2013.

I have been starting my training off with more sprints and weightlifting than usual to get my body ready for the long runs.  I do not want to injure my knees again and my pace has gotten slower since last year (I took a little too much time off around the holidays i guess).

I have gained a few lbs, only like 5lbs, but it is enough for me to notice and I feel that I have a faster pace when I weigh a little less.  So I have also been trying to diet a little bit lately to drop the 5lbs.  Which dieting for me means cutting back on the amount of Peanut Butter i eat daily…it is really hard!

Do you have an ideal weight that you like to be at when your are training?

P.S.  Andrew is doing great!  He is having a lot of fun with his internship and has made some great friends already 🙂  2 more weeks till we are reunited for a weekend!!!

Rise and Shine everyone!  Yesterday I woke up with the sun rising…I love waking up at this time (is that weird?).

For breakfast, I fixed myself a delicious “oatless” Oatmeal breakfast with  Spiced Chai tea.  Chewbacca was begging to go for walk by the time I finished breakfast.

The night before, Andrew and I met his parents for dinner at Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in downtown Durham.  It was everyones first time their so I was not sure what to expect.  As soon as we walked in I immediately thought “this is any mans heaven”.  There were atleast 40 flat screen TV’s in the restaurant, it was pretty cool.  We were seated in a half booth facing a wall with 22 TV’s with different sports on each one.

The menu was very different and unique…I loved it!  Andrew’s mom (Connie) and I ordered the Hummus platter as an appetizer and the men got wings (surprise surprise).  Our hummus platter came with 3 different styles; Lima Bean Hummus that has a citrus lime twist to it (my favorite); Black Eyed pea hummus that had a chipotle spicy kick to it; and the an original style Hummus.  We given pita bread, squash and cucumber to eat it with.

As my entree I got the Turkey and Cucumber Sandwich with a dill lemon spread (I requested some avocado on it too….avocado makes everything better). I was completely satisfied by the end of the meal.

It was hard for Andrew to say by to his parents.  We are leaving for San Diego Tuesday morning and this will be the farthest Andrew has ever been from his family/me.  He is sad about missing out on family events for the next 5 months but he is super excited at the same time to live in San Diego and work for the Olympic Training Facility.

After dinner, we found one of our favorite Disney movies on netflix, Fox and the Hound.  We got about half way through the movie before Chewbacca hit the control and fast forward the movie to the very end.  We were both to tired/comfortable to rewind it and we ended up passing out on the couch at 8:30 haha….. this explains why I woke up so early Sunday.

Justine and I did Insanity the Max Recovery Video.

After our workout we decided to try out another one of Shaun T’s workouts.  We went with his Hip Hop Abs video that he recorded before he released Insanity.  It was HILARIOUS!  I got more of a workout laughing at Shaun T’s comments then I did actually doing the moves haha.  You need to watch the video to understand what I am talking about.  Trust me you will not regret it ;).  And let me just say that I have never felt so white doing these videos.. I have NO rhythm.

We both agreed that Shaun T is on our Top 5 people that we want to meet before we die.  Do you have any random people on your top 5 list?

After our workout we showered and left for the mall to hit up Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual sale.  Since we were up so early we got to the mall before it even opened…. future memo: do not try to go shopping early on Sundays… nothing is open till 12.  We did end up leaving with some great deals 🙂  I am a bargain shopper so sales like this make me happy.

After our interesting shopping adventure we met up with Andrew and some of our friends at Carolina Ale House for lunch and to watch the Jets game.  One thing led to another at the Ale House and we ended up staying there till 5.

Happy Holidays everyone!  I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and spending it with friends and family like me 🙂

I am sure that you are all very busy with last minute christmas shopping, christmas parties, cooking/baking, etc.

I wanted to share a great 10 minute plank workout that my roommate and I made a video of recently.  This workout is a real challenge so feel free to take breaks whenever necessary….Justine and I definitely did haha.

I do not like crunches, sit-ups, or most of the derivatives.  To me a plank workout is far more beneficial because you are also strengthening/toning your gluteus, hips, triceps, biceps, quads, etc (depending witch plank you are performing).  Here are a few tips to ensure no injuries and that you get as much out of this workout as you can.

1. Your elbows/hands should be inline with your shoulders.

2. Squeeze gluteus and concentrate on tightening your abdominals.

3. Keep a neutral back and spine.  Do not allow your head to fall so you are looking at your toes

4. Do not let your hips sag to the ground.

5. Keep knees locked and stay on your toes.

5. When your form begins to suffer, take a break.  Your only benefitting from the plank when you are actually doing it in correct form.

There are 9 moves and we hold them for 1 minute each with a 10 sec. break in between each one.  Before we start the workout we will give a quick run through and demonstrate each move.

Remember to keep breathing and take breaks when needed!

Relaxed & Christmas Survey

Last night when I got home from work I drank my Sleepy Time Tea, popped a melatonin, and passed out looking through pinterest 🙂  It was a great night sleep, I got about 8 1/2 hours!  I still wanted to throw my alarm at the wall when it went off this morning though haha.  However, my growling stomach and Chewbacca (jumping on me to take him out) forced me to get out from my comfy cocoon.

I took Fluffy/Chewbacca for a mile run/stop every 5 feet for chewbacca to pee on everything this morning.  After our run together I went on an extra 5 mile run by myself.  I was forced to hurry up and shower when I got home because I had an appt. to get a massage/chiropractic visit this morning 🙂 I got a great deal off of Living Social for this about a month ago.

So, before I had my massage I met with the chiropractor doctor.  I had never been to one before and I am not gonna lie…. it freaked me out!  I was seriously concerned that he was going to break my neck or pull my leg out of its socket.  After the doctor snapped me back in place I finally had my massage :).  Another first for me was that it was a hot stone massage.  I REALLY enjoyed it and I asked my massage therapist to not go easy on me because I have been really sore the past few days.  She definitely pressed a lot harder then the last one but I was exactly what I needed and the hot stones was a nice change too.  I will definitely get this deal again if it pops up.

By the time I got to work this afternoon I was very relaxed 🙂 It was a great start to my day!

10. Where do you spend the holidays? Your house, your parents house, your in-laws house, extended family, friends?  We start off at my parents house, then move to Andrew’s Parents house, then to my grandmothers house then to my Dads sisters house.  It is a very busy day for us…

11. Christmas pajamas… yea or nae? No 😦 but I wish.  I know a lot of people that spend Christmas Day in their pajamas but we always have to dress up.

INSANITY!!

INSANITY!!

INSANITY!!!  If you have never heard of insanity it is a series of 10 workout discs packed with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance, and ab and core training moves.  No equipment is needed.  Shaun T. is the instructor and his comments keep my laughing throughout the videos.  It comes with a 9 week training schedule that will whoop your butt into shape.

I went through the series of videos last year when it got cold and to just get a break from running because I got runners kneeL.  I needed a little break from running recently too so my roommate and I started doing the videos again a few weeks ago.  We are not following the schedule fully this time because we wanted to run.  We are alternating days between running and insanity videos.

Andrew stayed home again today from work because he is still sick.  His cough sounds HORRIBLE!  But he felt good enough to walk to the dog park with Chewbacca and me.  There was still a little dew on the grass when we got there and Chewbacca was in an extra playful mood this morning.  To cut a long story short, we ended up having to give Chewbacca a bath when we go back home because he was covered in dirt and it was matted into his fluff.

Today on my training schedule I had Circuit Training.  I went through a lot of my workouts that i had pinned on Pinterest and made up my own routine.

Complete each circuit 3 times before moving on to the next circuit.

Circuit 1

90 Jumping Jacks

25 Squats with leg lift (left)

25 squats with leg lift (right)

60 second Plank

30 Mountain Climbers

20 Push-Ups

It took me about 45 minutes to complete.  As my cool down I did a few yoga moves.

I felt great after this workout!  It is always refreshing to switch up your normal routine and try something different.

After my workout I immediately made myself a class of chocolate almond milk and had some chips and salsa…YUM!  I am going through my salsa phase again so I can not get enough.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

This morning I went to my first Hot Yoga Core Strengthening class.  I liked it but Black Opal is still my favorite class.  We did not have any music during this class which I did not really enjoy.  But, it was still a good workout and I will go back to this class again.

Since I had not workout for like 3 days I decided to make this a Tough Workout Day.  After my Hot Yoga class I did the following workout below.

Tough Tuesday WOD

Run 1 mile

Circuit (rest 5 seconds between each)

Repeat each circuit 3 Xs

100 jumping jacks

30 second wall climbs

30 second mountain climbers

30 second burpees

1 min 30 sec wall sit

I have been craving soup lately for some reason… probably because it is starting to look/feel like fall outside 🙂 and fall makes me think of warm comfort foods like chili, soup, hot chocolate etc .  I decided to make up a batch of soup with my crock pot.  Andrew’s mother had given us a big bag of green peppers when we were home Sunday so I decided to use those up along with other random veggies we had in the apartment already.  Below is what I combined.   Hopefully it turns out okay :/.

Jay’s Vegetable Surprise Soup

4 bell peppers chopped

1/2 white onion

2 cups chicken broth

4 cups water

4 large carrots chopped

1/4 cup coconut milk

black pepper

cumin

herbal seasoning

garlic minced

Set the crock pot on low to cook for 5-6 hours.  Allow the soup to cool then puree.

Here is what it looked like before I left for work today.  When I get home tonight I am going to puree it all together and hope that it is Delicious 🙂
