Last Sunday Funday of 2012

Rise and Shine everyone!  Yesterday I woke up with the sun rising…I love waking up at this time (is that weird?).

For breakfast, I fixed myself a delicious “oatless” Oatmeal breakfast with  Spiced Chai tea.  Chewbacca was begging to go for walk by the time I finished breakfast.

A little AM morning play time with Chewbacca

The night before, Andrew and I met his parents for dinner at Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in downtown Durham.  It was everyones first time their so I was not sure what to expect.  As soon as we walked in I immediately thought “this is any mans heaven”.  There were atleast 40 flat screen TV’s in the restaurant, it was pretty cool.  We were seated in a half booth facing a wall with 22 TV’s with different sports on each one.

sorry for the bad quality

sorry for the bad quality…this was just one corner of the TV wall..I couldn’t get them all in one photo.

The menu was very different and unique…I loved it!  Andrew’s mom (Connie) and I ordered the Hummus platter as an appetizer and the men got wings (surprise surprise).  Our hummus platter came with 3 different styles; Lima Bean Hummus that has a citrus lime twist to it (my favorite); Black Eyed pea hummus that had a chipotle spicy kick to it; and the an original style Hummus.  We given pita bread, squash and cucumber to eat it with.

I forgot to take a picture when we first got it…. so here is the after effect of Connie and I .

As my entree I got the Turkey and Cucumber Sandwich with a dill lemon spread (I requested some avocado on it too….avocado makes everything better). I was completely satisfied by the end of the meal.

This is my favorite brewery around Raleigh that Andrew and I visit...I loved that I got my Sam Adams in one of their glasses :)

It was hard for Andrew to say by to his parents.  We are leaving for San Diego Tuesday morning and this will be the farthest Andrew has ever been from his family/me.  He is sad about missing out on family events for the next 5 months but he is super excited at the same time to live in San Diego and work for the Olympic Training Facility.

After dinner, we found one of our favorite Disney movies on netflix, Fox and the Hound.  We got about half way through the movie before Chewbacca hit the control and fast forward the movie to the very end.  We were both to tired/comfortable to rewind it and we ended up passing out on the couch at 8:30 haha….. this explains why I woke up so early Sunday.

What is your favorite Disney Movie?

Justine and I did Insanity the Max Recovery Video.

After our workout we decided to try out another one of Shaun T’s workouts.  We went with his Hip Hop Abs video that he recorded before he released Insanity.  It was HILARIOUS!  I got more of a workout laughing at Shaun T’s comments then I did actually doing the moves haha.  You need to watch the video to understand what I am talking about.  Trust me you will not regret it ;).  And let me just say that I have never felt so white doing these videos.. I have NO rhythm.

Here is just a sneak preview of some of the dance moves he broke out

We both agreed that Shaun T is on our Top 5 people that we want to meet before we die.  Do you have any random people on your top 5 list?

After our workout we showered and left for the mall to hit up Victoria’s Secret Semi-Annual sale.  Since we were up so early we got to the mall before it even opened…. future memo: do not try to go shopping early on Sundays… nothing is open till 12.  We did end up leaving with some great deals 🙂  I am a bargain shopper so sales like this make me happy.

After our interesting shopping adventure we met up with Andrew and some of our friends at Carolina Ale House for lunch and to watch the Jets game.  One thing led to another at the Ale House and we ended up staying there till 5.

Our friend Dave thought it would be a good idea to buy every "Whats for breakfast" shot... DELICIOUS

How did you spend your Sunday?

Cold Cold Go Away Come Again Another Day…

Good Morning Everyone!  I hope it is a prettier day for you wherever you may be.  It is cold and rainy here 😦

I have been battling a cold for the past few days.  So in my attempt to kick this cold in the butt I have been taking 4 different medicines.  One was Niquel and I ended up sleeping for 13 hours last night :).

I do have the best boyfriend ever! I woke up around midnight starving and he brought me my favorite snack….banana and peanut butter 🙂

After my midnight snack I immediately passed back out.

This morning I woke up feeling refreshed and ready for a run.  I was not about to let this weather stop me so I decided to hit up our apartment gym and run on the treadmill.

I ended up running 5 miles in 49 minutes.  Not my fastest time but I was trying to take it easy since I am still hacking/coughing.

As my post workout breakfast, I went with a mango almond smoothie.  It was nothing fancy just 1/2 cup rice milk, 1/2 cup mango, shaved almonds, ginger spice, nutmeg spice, 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder and blend.  It was simply and totally hit the spot.

Now I am off to work for a few hours then dinner with Andrew’s parents at Tobacco Campus.

What do you do when you have a cold? Do you try home remedies? every kind of medicine? sleep it off?

I Mustache You a Question….

How was your holiday weekend?  Mine was full of parties with family and friends.

Friday Night my Aunt & Uncle threw a Winter Solstice Party.  I had a great time! The food was AMAZING.  Everything (not an exaggeration) was homemade.  We were informed of some VERY exciting news that night too…… My cousin, Mazi, and his girlfriend, Lindsey, are now engaged!!!  This is the first engagement on my dads side of the family so I am extra excited :).

Congratulations Mazi & Lindsey!!

Saturday Night was our Mustache Party.  This is one of my favorite parties of the year.  Here are a few clips from the night.

Here are all the contestants of 2012.

And the winner is (drum roll)……

Nemat!!! (my cousin)

Things got a little crazy during the after party.  A small group of us went up to one of our local bars and sang karaoke.

Get your Plank on

Happy Holidays everyone!  I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and spending it with friends and family like me 🙂

I am sure that you are all very busy with last minute christmas shopping, christmas parties, cooking/baking, etc.

I wanted to share a great 10 minute plank workout that my roommate and I made a video of recently.  This workout is a real challenge so feel free to take breaks whenever necessary….Justine and I definitely did haha.

I do not like crunches, sit-ups, or most of the derivatives.  To me a plank workout is far more beneficial because you are also strengthening/toning your gluteus, hips, triceps, biceps, quads, etc (depending witch plank you are performing).  Here are a few tips to ensure no injuries and that you get as much out of this workout as you can.

1. Your elbows/hands should be inline with your shoulders.

2. Squeeze gluteus and concentrate on tightening your abdominals.

3. Keep a neutral back and spine.  Do not allow your head to fall so you are looking at your toes

4. Do not let your hips sag to the ground.

5. Keep knees locked and stay on your toes.

5. When your form begins to suffer, take a break.  Your only benefitting from the plank when you are actually doing it in correct form.

There are 9 moves and we hold them for 1 minute each with a 10 sec. break in between each one.  Before we start the workout we will give a quick run through and demonstrate each move.

Here is the link to the video. 9 minute plank workout

I am not sure how to the post a video into my blog yet….sorry

Move 1: Plank on hands

Move 2: Knee tucks

Move 3: Up/Downs; switching between elbows and hands

Move 4: Plank on elbows

Move 5: Knee to elbow

Move 6: Toe touches; bring left leg to right side and touch toes with right hand then switch sides

Move 7: Left Side plank lift with a leg lift

Move 8: Right Side plank lift with a leg lift

Move 9: Plank on elbow

Remember to keep breathing and take breaks when needed!

Good luck everyone and have a safe, happy Christmas!

“Between the Raindrops”

You all probably have not been aware of this but I have been taking a little break from training/running.   I was getting burnt out so I started mixing things up and started doing insanity…again.  If you do not know what insanity is check out my previous blog here.

I have been running about 3-5 miles on one day and doing insanity the next.  I stopped doing long runs on the weekend too.  However, I am out of my slump now and I am ready to jump back into it and begin training for my first full marathon!!  I am looking for one to do in June/July.  Does anyone have any suggestions??

Have you ever found a song that hits you deep and gives you the goose bumps?  Like the song hits an emotional nerve in your body.  I do not know how to explain it but it has happened to me with a few songs.  Adele, Florence and the Machine, Ewan McGregor (from Moulon Rouge), are just a few of the artist.

My newest song that it happened with is by Lifehouse ft. Natasha Bedingfield – Between the raindrops.  It is their newest single and I am obsessed…. I will play this song over and over again till I can sing it by myself.

“Right here and now
the way it was meant to be
there’s a smile on my face
knowing that together everything that’s in our way
Were better than alright”

On Mondays run I got that goose bump feeling and felt like I could run forever and as fast as light.  It was ironic because it started to drizzle while I was listening to the song and it gave me goose bumps all over again.

Let me set the picture for you…. I am running on some of my favorite back roads with no traffic,  I am running in the middle of the road, the sun is peeping over the clouds, the temperature is perfect, my headphones are blaring, and then it begins to drizzle during a song that is talking about walking between raindrops with your love, chasing dreams together, and knowing that whatever happens yall will be alright together.  Goose bumps!

The moment/the song made me feel so lucky and alive …. To have an amazing family, a boyfriend who adores me and that I love unconditionally, an amazing/fluffiest dog, great friends, an incredibly job, etc.  This moment made me look back at my past, present, and future and allowed me to realize how lucky I am to have the life I live. Do you ever have moments like this where you feel so alive?

I am not trying to brag or anything.  I just believe that everyone should have these moments every now and then. Especially after the horrific events that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary.  Life is so fragile and we are all so busy with our daily lives that we do not always sit back and reflect on all the amazing things we have right in front of us or the fantastic things that are about to come or the beautiful things we have already experienced.

This is why I love running because it is my reflection time.  If it is not running for you then find something else that allows you to relax with your thoughts.

Your Goal for the Day…

Find time for yourself and tell me about something that makes you feel the same way I did.

Word on the street is that Friday at 9:30 AM EST there is going to be a National Day of Silence for the Sandy Hook victims. I’m not sure if this is ‘official’ yet or not, but I plan on participating regardless. You should too.

Happy Happy Birthday to my Love!

Yesterday Andrew turned 24 years old.  This has been an exciting past few weeks for him because not only was it his birthday but he just recently accepted an amazing internship with the Olympics Training Facility in San Diego, CA.  This is a huge opportunity to for him and I am so proud of him!  I am definitely going to miss him for the 5 months that he will be gone but it is worth it to see him happy and to see him go after what he wants to do.

I Love You Babe!

The Birthday Celebration started Friday night at Tasu with sushi and Hot Soki.  We had some great friends come and join us in the celebration and we continued the festivities after dinner at Trali, an Irish Pub located just right across the street.  I am sorry for not taking any pictures of our night I am really slacking on taking photos lately but I am making it a goal to work on taking more.

Saturday was struggle for me, had a little to much fun Friday night ;).  But we did manage to go to the thrift store.  We found some amazing buys.  One of the many great deals we got was a HUGE white tiger that we gave to Justine haha.  She wasn’t as excited as Andrew and I.

Andrew and I were introduced a thrift store song and it has been motivating us to go more often.  Here is a link to the video,  this video will change your life…..   Thift Shop   …. Your Welcome

I pre made my cookie dough for the famous Oatmeal Cream Cookies.  This is my Granny’s recipe and I will not be posting this recipe….family secret haha.

Sunday was the big cookie baking day.  I made my Oatmeal Cream Cookies and Justine picked out two from Pinterest, Red Velvet Cake & Peppermint Cookies.  We had a few glasses of wine along with the baking to make the day even better ;).

Finally got to put my Santa Hats and Aprons to good use haha

After baking, Andrew and I met his parents for dinner at Tobacco Campus at Tyler’s Tap Room.  I love the Tobacco campus it is such a cool place in DT Durham.  There is a stream running through the strip and it is decorated with a ton of Christmas lights.  Once again, I apologize for not taking any pictures.  However, I was not impressed at all with Tyler’s Tap Room food.  I will not be getting the Portabella Sandwich again if we ever go again.

After Dinner we stopped by my work Christmas Party.  It was located in the Sara P. Duke Gardens.  It was a very pretty location (no pictures again).  We did not stay long though because we had made plans to go play laser tag with a few friends.

We luckily live right across the street from a kids amusement park, Frankie’s…how convenient haha.  Andrew really wanted to go play laser tag for his birthday.  Andrew ended up beating everyone in our group.  I came in 2nd to last….I felt like I was kicking butt during the game though 😦

Andrew was 03 and I was 18.

Andrew was 03 and I was 18.

Sunday was a very busy day for us so we ended it right by watching Love Actually.  This is one of my favorite Christmas movies! If you have never seen this before then I HIGHLY recommend it.

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend too!

When was the last time you had played laser tag/visited an Amusement park?

Relaxed & Christmas Survey

Last night when I got home from work I drank my Sleepy Time Tea, popped a melatonin, and passed out looking through pinterest 🙂  It was a great night sleep, I got about 8 1/2 hours!  I still wanted to throw my alarm at the wall when it went off this morning though haha.  However, my growling stomach and Chewbacca (jumping on me to take him out) forced me to get out from my comfy cocoon.

I took Fluffy/Chewbacca for a mile run/stop every 5 feet for chewbacca to pee on everything this morning.  After our run together I went on an extra 5 mile run by myself.  I was forced to hurry up and shower when I got home because I had an appt. to get a massage/chiropractic visit this morning 🙂 I got a great deal off of Living Social for this about a month ago.

So, before I had my massage I met with the chiropractor doctor.  I had never been to one before and I am not gonna lie…. it freaked me out!  I was seriously concerned that he was going to break my neck or pull my leg out of its socket.  After the doctor snapped me back in place I finally had my massage :).  Another first for me was that it was a hot stone massage.  I REALLY enjoyed it and I asked my massage therapist to not go easy on me because I have been really sore the past few days.  She definitely pressed a lot harder then the last one but I was exactly what I needed and the hot stones was a nice change too.  I will definitely get this deal again if it pops up.

By the time I got to work this afternoon I was very relaxed 🙂 It was a great start to my day!

Have you ever been to a chiropractor?  How was your experience?
